I want you to consider the following. Discuss it here on the blog and also be prepared to discuss it in class on Saturday.
It's evident from chapters 2 and 3 that different English colonies developed in the various regions of North America. Just by looking at the listing of colonies and their original purposes on page 26 of your book (or 37, depending on your edition), you can see these differneces. Remembering our discusion on God, Gold and Glory the first day of class. Would you say that the majority of these colonies were founded based on the pursuit of God? Gold? or Glory? or all three?
ALSO from chapters 2 and 3, I want you to be aware of the differnt types and classes of people that settled these colonies. VERY different types of English colonists settled in the New England colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Plymouth, Rhode Island and Connecticut than settled in the Chesapeake colonies of Delaware, Virginia and Maryland, as well as the Southern colonies of North and South Carolina and Georgia. Who were the people that settled in these 3 different groups of colonies? Were they more interested in Gold, God or Glory?
The time period discussed in these chapters is very important because two VERY differnt socities and cultures begin to develop in North America that will persist even up until today, so please read them very carefully.
As we learned from chapters 2 &3,the Britain empire after being going through differents periods of powers was under the reign of Elizabeth I. She tried to combine Catholicism and protestanism. This wasn't good in the eyes of certain protestants who decided to go back to the new world. After Elizabeth I death, James I came to power and issued a charter to London company to go to Virginia. After the London company, another group of people came and settled in New England. These three group have each different purposes.
1- New England colonies: people came there first for God.The Puritans were living there and shared their beliefs. When the Pilgrims came, they from England and Netherland, they were were isolationist by nature. they came with their family (men, women and children) and found the first succesful british colony. These people were farmers.
2- The Chesapeak colonies: Was founded by the London company. They came they to find "Glory' and "Gold".This colony was composed only by poors men who came from England to find gold on the beach. They weren't skilled because they were only soldiers and convicts.
3-The Southern colonies: After the hope of the London company worker to find gold and plentiful land failed, they headed to the South were they found tobbaco. They started creating plantations and selling their goods to Europe.

The Spanish that explored and conquered parts of the New World had three basic ideas that motivated them; Gold, Glory, and God.
The Chesapeaks migrated to MD, VA and/or Delaware based on searching for wealth (Gold). The people who migrated hear where mostly male and poor farmers and when they came here they found out that there is no gold or wealth here but they found out that they can plant tobacco and feed their selves and their families.
The people from the New England (middle) or the puritans came here for God and they wanted to keep their families and properties to themselves only. These people were from Western Europe was still at the tail end of the middle Ages and feudalism. Europe had been at war, off and on, for centuries. This had fostered a culture that glorified the military and its leaders. Men who won battles or performed other great deeds were often rewarded by titles of nobility, land, money, and laborers. Since there was little land to be had in Europe, the discovery of huge amounts of land in the New World became a big motivator for individuals to seek personal glory there.

Those that settled in New England came seeking God, and came over as families and villages. Where as that settled in the Chesapeake Colonies came over because they were promised riches and wealth by the London Company. Those settlers mostly consisted of mostly former soldiers and prisoners and were mostly men. The settlers of the Southern Colonies didn't view America as a means to become instantly wealthy. They also focused on recruiting settlers from the other colonies.

The northern colonies were settled by two groups, the pilgrims and the puritans. The pilgrims were religious nonconformists who came to America to practice in accordance with their (highly conservative) views. The puritans on the other hand, adhered to Anglican system.
The Middle colonies were fueled solely by money, settled by people looking for wealth.
The south was settled for agriculture, leading eventually to the plantation culture of the American south.
